A major industrial fire has broken out in the village of Banka near Piešťany, drawing a large emergency response and raising renewed concerns about industrial safety across the Slovakia. The blaze was reported Wednesday morning and required a complex firefighting operation that continued for hours.

According to the Hasičský a záchranný zbor, the fire most likely originated in an industrial drying furnace. By the time firefighters arrived, flames had already spread into the building’s metal-sheet roof structure — a dangerous scenario because heat accumulates between insulation layers, allowing hidden hotspots to persist long after visible flames disappear.

Fire crews had to dismantle sections of the roof from the outside to reach concealed burning areas and prevent re-ignition. Professional firefighters from Piešťany were assisted by volunteer units from nearby communities. The priority was not only extinguishing the flames but also ensuring the structure would not reignite later in the day.

Industrial fires are among the most complicated emergencies firefighters face. Machinery, chemical residues, insulation materials, and ventilation shafts can carry heat through the structure, often creating multiple ignition points. For this reason, monitoring and overhaul operations frequently last much longer than the initial suppression phase.

Recent incidents across the region have highlighted the importance of preventive maintenance and technical inspections in manufacturing facilities. Safety specialists warn that even a small malfunction in high-temperature equipment can escalate into a large-scale emergency within minutes.
