Croatia, a top summer destination for tourists, especially Slovaks, is witnessing a 20% increase in wildfires this year compared to 2023, with a staggering 300% rise in burned area, according to Croatia’s Chief Fire Commander Slavko Tucaković. “Compared to last year, we’ve seen around 3,900 wildfires, up from 3,200 in 2023. The total burned area has expanded from 3,900 hectares to over 12,000 hectares,” said Tucaković. Despite the spike in incidents, no firefighters or tourists have been injured, he confirmed.

The rise in wildfires has not compromised safety, but it signals a growing environmental concern. In response, Croatian firefighting services are being reinforced with 10,250 new protective gear sets, 34 fire trucks, and 149 additional emergency vehicles.

The increased wildfire activity underscores the challenges posed by climate change and rising temperatures, particularly in Mediterranean regions. With summer tourism peaking, Croatian authorities are intensifying fire preparedness to safeguard both residents and visitors.
