The first day of the Notting Hill Carnival in London was overshadowed by a violent incident in which three people were stabbed, including a 32-year-old woman who sustained life-threatening injuries, according to a statement released on Monday by the Metropolitan Police.
The Notting Hill Carnival, a vibrant celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture and the largest street festival in Europe, takes place annually in the streets of west London’s Notting Hill neighborhood. This year, the festival has drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees and is heavily policed, with approximately 7,000 officers deployed to ensure public safety.
Despite the festive atmosphere, law enforcement officials reported a total of 90 arrests on Sunday. These included:
- 10 individuals for assaulting emergency service personnel
- 18 for possession of offensive weapons
- 4 for sexual offenses
“We’ve seen hundreds of thousands of people enjoy an incredible celebration at Notting Hill Carnival,” the Metropolitan Police said in an official statement. “Sadly, a small number chose to commit crimes and engage in violence.”
The carnival, which continues through Monday, remains under tight security as police aim to prevent further disturbances and ensure the safety of attendees.
