A critical data cable connecting Sweden and Finland has been damaged at two separate points on Finnish territory, leaving approximately 6,000 households and around 100 businesses affected. The disruption was reported on Tuesday by Swedish media, including Dagens Nyheter, which cited the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS).
The cable, owned by Global Connect, plays a key role in maintaining digital communication infrastructure between the two Nordic nations. Authorities in both countries are actively investigating the incident.

“This matter is under investigation in cooperation with the company,” Finnish Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne stated on social platform X. “We take the situation seriously,” she added.
This latest incident follows the mysterious severing of two subsea data cables in the Baltic Sea last month—one between Finland and Germany and another between Lithuania and Sweden—raising security and stability concerns across Northern Europe’s communication networks.
As the probe continues, telecom authorities emphasize the need for enhanced protection of critical infrastructure amid rising geopolitical tensions in the region.
