MEXICO CITY — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Tuesday that Mexico will impose reciprocal tariffs on imports from the United States in response to Washington’s recent protectionist measures. While underscoring a desire to resolve disputes through dialogue, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico must act to protect its economy and sovereignty.
Speaking at a press conference in Mexico City, Sheinbaum stated, “The unilateral decision by the United States affects both domestic and foreign companies operating in Mexico. Therefore, we have chosen to respond with tariff and non-tariff measures.”
The president clarified that Mexico’s countermeasures are not intended to escalate the trade conflict, but rather to safeguard national interests. “Our actions are not aimed at economic or trade confrontation,” she noted, adding that specific details of the response will be announced this Sunday.
Trade Tensions Rise
The move follows the U.S. administration’s imposition of a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada, effective Tuesday, as well as a 20% tariff increase on Chinese imports. U.S. President Donald Trump stated the tariffs are aimed at pressuring these countries to intensify efforts against illegal immigration and the smuggling of fentanyl into the United States.
Trump had originally intended to impose the tariffs starting February 1 but delayed implementation following negotiations with Canadian and Mexican leaders.
Mexico’s planned response adds another layer to the escalating tensions, though the Sheinbaum administration continues to call for diplomatic engagement to avoid long-term economic fallout.
