ANKARA – Turkey is prepared to send troops to Ukraine as part of a broader international peacekeeping mission, a senior source from the Turkish Ministry of Defense confirmed on Thursday. The move reflects Ankara’s growing interest in playing a more active role in regional security and diplomatic efforts amid the ongoing war.

“The possibility of contributing to a peace mission will be assessed with all relevant parties if it becomes necessary for ensuring regional stability and peace,” the defense official stated.

The announcement came as European Union leaders convened in Brussels with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to explore ways to reinforce both Ukraine’s defenses and broader European security. The high-level talks follow a dramatic shift in U.S. policy, with President Donald Trump suspending military aid to Kyiv and halting the sharing of intelligence data.

Turkey’s statement has drawn attention due to its unique diplomatic positioning. While a NATO member, Ankara has maintained channels of communication with both Ukraine and Russia, often positioning itself as a mediator in the conflict.

The prospect of Turkish troops joining a peacekeeping mission could mark a significant escalation in international involvement on Ukrainian soil, and a potential turning point in efforts to stabilize the region.
