On the eve of International Women’s Day, the European Commission (EC) presented its updated strategy for gender equality and women’s rights, reaffirming its long-term commitment to advancing equality across the European Union. The plan outlines a forward-looking political vision and a comprehensive approach to eliminating systemic discrimination and promoting equal opportunities.
Speaking at the launch, EC President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the vital role of gender equality in building stronger and fairer societies.
“There is no reason why a woman should earn less than a man, have fewer health rights, or be exposed to violence just because she is a woman,” von der Leyen said. “Today’s plan reinforces our commitment to a European Union where gender equality and women’s rights are actively promoted.”
The new initiative focuses on key areas, including gender-based violence, equal pay, work-life balance, educational access, and political participation. It calls for unified action among EU member states and institutions to implement measures that ensure true gender parity.
The Commission also released its 2025 Gender Equality Report, assessing the progress made under the 2020–2025 strategy. While some legal milestones have been achieved, the EU acknowledges that full implementation of the Beijing Declaration commitments remains incomplete.
