Tragedy struck the popular Austrian ski resort of Sölden on Monday morning when a powerful avalanche buried three ski tourers, killing two and injuring one. The incident occurred in the Ötztal Valley, near the village of Gurgl in Tyrol, as reported by the Austrian Press Agency (APA).

The victims were part of a group of six skiers engaging in ski mountaineering, a popular but risky alpine sport. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased. According to early reports, the avalanche may have caused the skiers to fall into a glacial crevasse, but the exact cause of the accident remains unclear.

The injured skier was rescued and airlifted by helicopter to a hospital in Zams, where they are currently being treated. A massive search and rescue operation was immediately launched following the avalanche, involving multiple helicopter teams and mountain rescue units.

The avalanche is described as relatively large, covering a wide area and making rescue efforts extremely challenging. Mountain authorities are urging visitors to remain cautious, especially as spring brings unpredictable snow conditions to the region.

As investigations continue, the tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of backcountry skiing in alpine terrain.
