Parliament Defeats Attempt to Topple Government Committed to EU Integration and Euro Adoption by 2026

In a critical test of political resolve, Bulgaria’s pro-European government successfully survived a no-confidence vote in Parliament on Thursday, dealing a significant blow to the pro-Russian opposition party Vazrazhdane (Revival). The motion, centered on the government’s pro-Western foreign policy stance, failed by a wide margin, affirming the nation’s commitment to democratic values and EU integration.

Pro-Russian Motion Defeated by Strong Majority

The no-confidence motion, initiated by Vazrazhdane, accused the government of betraying Bulgaria’s national interests by aligning with Western powers, supporting Ukraine, and endorsing EU sanctions against Russia. The motion gained support from two small nationalist factions but ultimately fell short in a 150–54 vote in the 240-seat legislature.

According to political analysts, the outcome was expected, given the parliamentary majority held by parties favoring Bulgaria’s continued alignment with the European Union.

“This was a political maneuver designed to amplify Russian propaganda narratives as part of a hybrid war against Bulgaria,” said political analyst Ilian Vassilev. “It’s an effort by Moscow to influence domestic politics through disinformation and destabilization tactics.”

Government Reaffirms Eurozone Aspirations

The ruling center-right party, GERB (Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria), denounced the motion as a deliberate attempt to derail the country’s planned euro adoption in 2026, a key step in strengthening Bulgaria’s role within the European Union.

Prime Minister Rossen Zhelyazkov hailed the parliamentary result as a victory for the Bulgarian people and their European future.

“The vote confirms our shared commitment to democratic progress and European integration, a path the vast majority of Bulgarians have chosen,” Zhelyazkov declared following the session.

Broader Geopolitical Significance

The vote underscores Bulgaria’s resilience amid mounting geopolitical pressure and disinformation campaigns. It also sends a clear message to Brussels and Moscow alike: Bulgaria remains firmly committed to its Western alliances, despite internal and external attempts to shift its course.

As tensions persist in Eastern Europe, the outcome of this vote is seen as pivotal not only for Bulgaria but for regional stability across the EU’s southeastern frontier.
