French President Emmanuel Macron may step in as Europe’s chief negotiator in potential ceasefire talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to reports from The Telegraph and sources close to the Élysée Palace, as cited by Ukrainian outlet Gazeta.ua.

Though Macron previously cut direct communication with Putin after concluding the Russian leader had no intention of ending the war, insiders now suggest the French president is prepared to resume dialogue “at the right time.”

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Macron has positioned himself as a diplomatic bridge between Europe and Moscow, even in the face of criticism from some European allies. His willingness to maintain open channels with the Kremlin has made him a unique figure among Ukraine’s staunchest European supporters.

“I’m ready to talk with Putin, but only if there’s a united front with our European partners and Ukraine,” Macron recently stated.

When asked just days ago if the time had come to re-engage with Putin, Macron responded bluntly: “It seems not yet.”

As the war continues with no end in sight, Macron’s potential return to the negotiating table could signal a shift in Europe’s strategy toward diplomatic engagement—but only under the right conditions.
