Iran has firmly rejected the idea of direct negotiations with the United States, with Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi labeling such talks as “pointless” in light of ongoing threats and conflicting messages from Washington. The statement comes in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent suggestion that he would prefer direct talks with Tehran.

Tehran Pushes Back on Direct Engagement

“Direct negotiations make no sense with a party that constantly threatens the use of force in violation of the UN Charter and whose officials express contradictory positions,” Araghchi said in a statement released by Iran’s Foreign Ministry.

While reaffirming Iran’s commitment to diplomacy, Araghchi emphasized that any future discussions with the U.S. must be conducted through indirect channels. “Iran remains committed to diplomacy and is ready to pursue the path of indirect negotiations,” he stated. “Just as Iran is serious about diplomacy and negotiation, it is equally firm and resolute in defending its national interests and sovereignty.”

Skepticism Toward U.S. Intentions

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian echoed similar sentiments on Saturday, indicating Iran’s willingness to engage in dialogue—but only under equal terms. He questioned Washington’s sincerity, saying, “If you want negotiations, then what is the point of threats?”

President Trump last month called on Iran to negotiate its nuclear program directly with the U.S., warning that failure to reach a deal could lead to military action. He reiterated his preference for “direct talks” with Iran, asserting, “I think things move faster, and you understand the other side much better than through intermediaries.”

Diplomatic Standoff Deepens

The remarks from both Iranian officials underscore the growing mistrust between Tehran and Washington, despite a shared acknowledgment of the importance of dialogue. The latest development comes amid heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, regional influence, and the threat of renewed sanctions or military action.

For now, Iran appears unwilling to alter its diplomatic strategy, citing a lack of consistency and credibility in U.S. policy. The impasse raises further uncertainty about the future of international negotiations and regional stability.
