North Korean leader Kim Jong-un personally supervised a special forces training exercise this week, highlighting the regime’s focus on military readiness and intensified tactical training. The event underscores Pyongyang’s continued efforts to modernize its armed forces, with state media declaring these operations vital for “victory on the battlefield.”
According to North Korea’s Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim visited a special operations training base on Friday, coinciding with the ousting of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol by the country’s Constitutional Court. During the visit, Kim oversaw comprehensive tactical drills, including a marksmanship competition.
In a carefully choreographed display, Kim Jong-un was seen testing a newly developed sniper rifle, reportedly built using domestic North Korean technology. State media emphasized the weapon’s strength and precision, although it remains unclear whether Kim himself hit the bullseye in the displayed target footage. Kim expressed his satisfaction with the rifle’s performance, praising its potential use by elite military units.
“True combat capability, which guarantees victory in war, is enhanced through intensive training. This is the most vivid expression of patriotism and loyalty to the country,” Kim was quoted as saying by KCNA.
The drill comes amid heightened regional tensions, especially following threats issued by Kim’s influential sister, Kim Yo-jong, last month. She warned the U.S. of retaliatory actions in response to what she called “political and military provocations,” referring to the docking of the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier in the South Korean port of Busan.
Meanwhile, former U.S. President Donald Trump, who met with Kim Jong-un three times during his first term, stated this week that he is “in communication” with the North Korean leader and may “do something at some point.”
