Tens of thousands of Americans took to the streets on Saturday in one of the largest coordinated protest efforts since President Donald Trump returned to office in January. The demonstrations—spanning all 50 states—targeted not only Trump’s controversial policy decisions but also the growing influence of billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.

Nationwide Discontent

From New York to Los Angeles, protesters gathered under the banner of protecting democracy and opposing what many described as authoritarian overreach. Major cities including Washington D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, and Charlotte witnessed large turnouts.

In Manhattan, artist Shaina Kesner, 43, expressed her frustration: “I’m so angry—yes, I’m furious. A group of privileged white men are running this country into the ground.”

At the Washington Monument near the White House, thousands waved signs reading “Hands Off Democracy” and “Stop the Coup,” demanding Trump’s resignation and a return to constitutional governance.

Musk in the Spotlight

Elon Musk also faced public backlash during the protests. In New York’s Bryant Park, demonstrators carried signs that read “Unplug Elon” and “I can write this only because the Department of Education once existed”—a jab at the Trump administration’s controversial decision to dismantle several federal agencies, including the Department of Education, allegedly with Musk’s support.

Organizers reported that Musk’s involvement in government restructuring and sweeping layoffs had ignited fears over unchecked private influence in public affairs.

Peaceful but Powerful

The demonstrations were mostly peaceful, with organizers estimating that more than 250,000 people participated nationwide—far exceeding early expectations. Over 1,000 events were registered, ranging from local gatherings to massive rallies like the one in Washington, where anticipated attendance of 20,000 was surpassed within hours.

In Boston, protester Dominic Santella told AFP, “Honestly, we’re here to stop fascism.”

Trump Dismisses Protests

Despite the scale of the public outcry, the White House dismissed the demonstrations. “My policies won’t change,” Trump said on Friday, signaling continued support from his base. However, experts warn that his administration’s actions pose a serious threat to American democratic institutions.
