A leading Polish lawmaker has issued a stark warning to the United States, stating that any recognition of Russia’s territorial gains in Ukraine would cross a “red line” for Central and Eastern Europe. Paweł Kowal, head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in Poland’s Sejm and advisor to Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Ukrainian matters, made the statement in an interview with The Financial Times, ahead of his trip to Washington.

A Red Line for Central Europe
Kowal cautioned that if a future U.S. administration — particularly under Donald Trump — were to legitimize the territories seized by Russia, including Crimea and the Donbas, it would constitute a “historic mistake.” According to him, such a move would not only jeopardize Ukrainian sovereignty but would also destabilize the broader security architecture of Central Europe.
“There is a difference between temporary solutions aimed at halting the fighting and fulfilling Russia’s expectations to recognize annexed territories,” Kowal said, warning against enabling Vladimir Putin’s imperial ambitions.
Implications for Regional Security
Speaking before scheduled meetings with senior U.S. lawmakers and Trump’s Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg, Kowal emphasized that ignoring European allies in any peace negotiations could fracture transatlantic unity. “It’s extremely difficult to talk about security in Ukraine without considering the broader safety of Central Europe,” he noted.
Historical Context and Modern Parallels
Kowal drew comparisons to the 1939 partition of Poland between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, as well as the post-WWII Yalta agreement, which placed Poland within Moscow’s sphere of influence. These historical precedents, he argues, underscore the dangers of Western concessions to authoritarian powers.
“Corporate investments in Ukraine will only come if backed by serious U.S. security guarantees,” he added, highlighting the intersection of politics, defense, and economic stability.
