As trade tensions rise following new tariffs announced by former U.S. President Donald Trump, Spain and Italy have called for calm and diplomacy, urging negotiated solutions rather than retaliation. Their comments come amid growing division within the European Union over how to respond to Washington’s increasingly protectionist stance.
Speaking to Politico, Spanish Economy and Trade Minister Carlos Cuerpo emphasized the need for diplomacy: “We continue to advocate for a negotiated resolution,” he said, warning against the economic fallout of a tit-for-tat trade war.
Italy’s Finance and Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti echoed the sentiment, urging his fellow EU ministers to avoid knee-jerk responses. “We must remain calm, assess the impact carefully, and avoid retaliatory tariffs that would hurt everyone—especially us,” Giorgetti stated.
However, not all major EU economies share the same view. Germany and France are pushing for a firmer stance. German Economy Minister Robert Habeck argued that the EU holds significant leverage. “We are in a strong position. We can align with other global players and increase pressure on the U.S. accordingly,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron went even further, calling for a temporary halt to European investments in the U.S. until clarity is reached on trade policy. “It’s crucial that recently announced investment plans be paused while we resolve this issue with the United States,” Macron stated.
Meanwhile, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič confirmed after Friday’s talks with American officials that the European Union remains open to negotiations. “We are committed to meaningful dialogue, but we are equally prepared to defend our interests,” he warned.
As internal EU debate continues, the path forward remains uncertain. With Washington showing no signs of backing down, Brussels faces a delicate balancing act between economic pragmatism and geopolitical pressure.
