In a chilling development that highlights growing undersea espionage activity, the British Royal Navy has discovered multiple Russian surveillance sensors near the UK coastline. The devices, believed to be part of a covert intelligence-gathering operation, were found both washed ashore and on the seabed, according to The Sunday Times and The Telegraph, as cited by AFP on Sunday.

British military and intelligence officials suspect the sensors were deployed to monitor the movements of the country’s Vanguard-class nuclear submarines—specifically, the four vessels that serve as the core of the UK’s nuclear deterrent. At least one of these submarines is known to be continuously at sea, maintaining the nation’s strategic readiness.

“There is no doubt that a war is raging beneath the Atlantic. It’s a cat-and-mouse game that started with the Cold War and has intensified once again,” a senior UK defense source told The Sunday Times. Further intelligence on Russian activities in UK waters remains classified. “It’s a bit like a space race. The world is full of secrecy and smoke screens. But the signs are there—something is definitely heating up,” the source added.

A three-month investigation by The Sunday Times also revealed the presence of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) near critical undersea communication cables. Moreover, British authorities reportedly possess credible evidence suggesting that yachts owned by Russian oligarchs may have been used for reconnaissance operations.

The discovery raises concerns reminiscent of multiple incidents in the Baltic Sea, where crucial telecommunication and power cables have been damaged since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. These incidents are widely suspected to be hybrid attacks orchestrated by the Kremlin, though Moscow continues to deny any involvement.

As tensions escalate beneath the waves, the UK and its allies are likely to enhance surveillance and defense capabilities in strategic maritime zones.
