French authorities have successfully thwarted a potential terrorist attack after arresting three young men in Paris, one of whom allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS). The suspects were formally charged on Sunday with planning a terrorist act and possession of explosives, according to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT).
The trio, all of whom are legal adults, were taken into investigative custody following their arrest last Wednesday. While prosecutors did not disclose their exact ages or how far their attack plans had progressed, RTL Radio and Le Parisien report that the primary suspect is a 19-year-old man from Dunkirk in northern France. He had reportedly declared his support for IS in online communications.
A search of his residence uncovered a homemade explosive vest constructed with firecrackers and a detonator, signaling a potentially imminent threat. Investigators believe the group was planning an attack on a public location, with possible targets including Jewish institutions, youth hostels, and public offices in northern France.
“The charges brought forward reflect the seriousness of the threat,” said a spokesperson from the prosecutor’s office, confirming earlier media reports.
The arrests come at a time of heightened vigilance across Europe, where authorities continue to monitor radicalized individuals, especially those influenced by online extremist propaganda. The Islamic State, though weakened territorially, remains a major security concern due to its ability to inspire and direct lone-wolf attacks and small-scale terror cells.
