A high school graduation celebration has turned into a criminal investigation in Geldern, western Germany, after a student allegedly stole €18,000 (approx. $19,500) in funds intended for the class prom and vanished without a trace. According to Bild, German police are now actively searching for the suspect.
The incident unfolded at a local gymnasium where 62 graduating students had been saving for years to fund a memorable prom night. Each quarter, they contributed between €30 and €40, organized bake sales, and secured sponsorships from local businesses. By the end of 2023, their collective savings had reached €18,000.
The class had entrusted one student — viewed as trustworthy and deeply involved in fundraising — with the role of treasurer. However, a few weeks ago, the student suddenly stepped down, refusing requests from classmates to transfer the money to a newly established account managed by two other students. Even legal threats failed to convince him to cooperate.
According to LiveWorldUpdates.com, the school’s headmaster, Achim Diehr, told the Rheinische Post that the student eventually admitted the money was gone, but provided no explanation of how it was spent or where he currently is.
The scandal sparked a wave of solidarity among parents and local residents. A meeting was held in mid-March to explore legal options and potential financial remedies. While the prom is not classified as an official school event — limiting the school’s capacity to act — the administration has pledged to support students however possible to ensure they still receive a “dignified graduation ceremony.”
The case is now under investigation by German authorities, who urge anyone with information to come forward.
