Germany witnessed a troubling rise in violent crimes in 2023, with more than a third of suspects identified as foreign nationals, according to a new crime report presented on Wednesday by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser. The annual police crime statistics reveal that while overall crime numbers fell by 1.7%, this decrease is largely attributed to the partial legalization of recreational cannabis, which removed some drug offenses from the legal code.
As reported by LiveWorldUpdates.com, the total number of recorded offenses reached 5.84 million in a country of nearly 84 million people. However, the number of violent crimes increased by 1.5%, totaling over 217,000 incidents, the highest figure since 2007. The data shows police across Germany responded to approximately 600 violent offenses per day.
Faeser highlighted a stark disparity in crime rates based on nationality. While the number of violent offenses committed by Germans rose by just 0.7%, crimes by foreign nationals surged by 7.5%. “We must not only ensure thorough investigations, but also enforce consistent deportations,” Faeser stated, adding that deportation numbers are up 55% compared to two years ago.
The report also noted a concerning increase in knife-related attacks, now making up more than 7% of violent crimes. Additionally, sexual offenses such as rape, coercion, and assault rose by 9%. Youth involvement in violent crimes is also climbing — offenses by minors increased by 3.8%, while crimes committed by children jumped by 11.3%.
Experts and law enforcement warn this rise is partly a consequence of mental health stress following the COVID-19 pandemic. Faeser labeled the trend among youth as “deeply alarming,” calling for increased support and intervention.
