Northern Ireland is facing a critical wildfire crisis, with firefighters battling nearly 150 blazes over just three days—many of them believed to be deliberately set. Fire officials and environmental leaders are sounding the alarm as dry and windy weather is expected to persist, raising fears of further outbreaks.

Danny Ard, Chief Officer of the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed on Monday that 146 wildfires were recorded since Thursday midnight. “A significant majority of these incidents are suspected to be arson-related,” Ard stated, according to DPA via TASR.

One of the most severe fires broke out near the village of Hilltown, close to the Mourne Mountains in County Down. Fire crews declared a major incident in the area, deploying more than 100 firefighters and 15 fire appliances to contain the blaze. The situation was brought under control early Sunday morning, but not before several local residents were evacuated for safety.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with the Hilltown fire on suspicion of arson but was later released on bail. Authorities continue to investigate the incident.

Over the weekend, large-scale wildfires also swept through other parts of the Mourne Mountains and County Antrim. Firefighters were still actively battling flames near Newcastle in County Down as of Monday.

Northern Ireland’s Environment Minister Andrew Muir issued a stern warning, stating that continued reckless behavior by arsonists could lead to tragic consequences. “If those responsible do not stop, these fires could end up costing someone their life,” Muir said.

With weather forecasts predicting more dry and windy conditions throughout the week, emergency services remain on high alert. Officials are urging the public to report suspicious activity and take extra caution to prevent further devastation.
