The U.S.-China trade war is entering a new phase of escalation after former President Donald Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Chinese imports, prompting a sharp response from Beijing. On Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Commerce condemned the U.S. move, accusing Washington of economic blackmail and vowing to take “forceful countermeasures” if the tariffs are enacted.

“The United States is making one mistake after another. This coercive approach will never be accepted by China,” a ministry spokesperson stated. “If the U.S. insists on escalating, China will fight back to the end to protect its rights and interests.”

Trump’s latest tariff threat follows last week’s introduction of a 34% tariff on Chinese goods as part of a broader package aimed at reviving U.S. manufacturing. In response, China announced it would apply an identical 34% tariff on American exports, effective immediately.

Despite its firm rhetoric, China’s Ministry of Commerce reiterated its willingness to engage in dialogue, stating that “there are no winners in a trade war” and emphasizing the need for negotiated solutions.

The tit-for-tat measures have reignited fears of global supply chain disruptions, rising consumer prices, and long-term damage to the world economy, especially as both superpowers double down on their protectionist agendas.
