Tensions between Russia and France escalated this week after French border police briefly detained a Russian Foreign Ministry official at a French airport. The incident prompted Moscow to issue a formal diplomatic protest, according to reports from AFP and the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Maria Zakharova, spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated on Wednesday that the detained official was subjected to temporary confinement, and her laptop and phone were confiscated. The specific reasons for the detention have not been disclosed by French authorities.

Following the incident, Russia summoned the French ambassador in Moscow, expressing strong disapproval of what it described as an unfriendly and unjustified act. In response, the Russian Embassy in Paris issued a formal note of protest to the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Although the official was eventually allowed to enter French territory, she was reportedly forced to spend an entire day in the airport’s border control zone, Zakharova said during a press briefing. She also warned of potential consequences for France if similar incidents occur in the future.

The diplomatic dispute comes amid already strained relations between Russia and Western nations, particularly over security issues and geopolitical tensions across Europe.
