A 76-year-old man has been convicted by a French court for issuing death threats and inciting murder against a judge who presided over the trial of far-right leader Marine Le Pen. The incident followed the high-profile ruling that found Le Pen and her party, National Rally (RN), guilty of misusing European Parliament funds.

According to AFP, the defendant, a resident of La Garenne-Colombes, a suburb of Paris, posted a disturbing message on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shortly after the verdict. The post featured a photo of a guillotine and was captioned: “What this bitch deserves.” The image targeted the judge involved in the case.

The court sentenced the man to eight months of suspended imprisonment and imposed a €3,000 fine. He was found guilty of contempt of court and incitement to murder. While the man claimed the guillotine symbolized “justice,” prosecutors argued it constituted a clear threat of violence. The man, originally from Algeria, had no prior criminal record and insisted he acted out of anger, claiming that “on social media, anything can be said.”

His defense emphasized the low visibility of the post, noting it had received only 200 views, and that the account had minimal followers.

Meanwhile, Marine Le Pen was sentenced to four years, with two years suspended and two under electronic monitoring, along with a €100,000 fine and a five-year ban from public office.
