HONOLULU – New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters emphasized on Sunday the critical need for the United States to remain an “active and constructive partner” in the Indo-Pacific region. His remarks came during a diplomatic visit to Hawaii, part of a broader regional tour aimed at strengthening Pacific alliances.

As geopolitical competition intensifies, particularly with China’s expanding influence in the Pacific Islands, New Zealand and the U.S. are reinforcing cooperation to maintain a strategic balance. “New Zealand wants—and indeed needs—the United States to stay actively engaged in the Pacific,” Peters stated, signaling Wellington’s reliance on American presence in the region.

Peters recently met with key U.S. figures in Washington, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. After the meetings, he described the U.S.–New Zealand relationship as being built on a “solid foundation,” especially amid what he called “the most challenging strategic environment in a decade.”

The Honolulu stop is part of a week-long Pacific tour where Peters is accompanied by other New Zealand lawmakers. His goal, as conveyed to U.S. officials, is to ensure consistent American involvement in regional development and security efforts.

However, uncertainty looms over future U.S. foreign policy as political transitions and budgetary constraints cast doubt on Washington’s sustained Pacific engagement. Some New Zealand lawmakers have expressed concern that shifts in U.S. leadership or aid cuts could create a vacuum that China might fill.

“New Zealand is looking forward to continued constructive dialogue in the coming days,” Peters added, reinforcing Wellington’s commitment to its Pacific partnerships.

As tensions rise in the Indo-Pacific, New Zealand’s call for dependable U.S. engagement underscores the region’s growing importance on the global stage.
