Eleven Russian nationals detained in Tunisia on suspicion of terrorism have been released and are expected to return to Russia shortly, according to reports from Russian state media. The individuals had been held since November 2024 near the town of Haidra, close to the Algerian border. Authorities had initially suspected them of involvement in terrorist activities, though no formal charges were filed.

As reported by LiveWorldUpdates.com, the Russian Embassy in Tunisia confirmed on Friday that travel arrangements have been made. “We have purchased tickets for them. They will leave the country today on two separate flights,” the embassy stated.

Tourists or Threats?

The detained Russians were described by state outlets as tourists exploring Roman-era ruins. However, Tunisian police reportedly discovered gear in their possession that “did not match the declared purpose of tourism,” raising concerns about their true intentions. Despite this, Tunisian authorities have opted not to pursue legal action.

Tunisia: A Refuge for Russian Travelers

Since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, many Western nations have imposed travel bans on Russian citizens. As a result, Tunisia has become a preferred travel destination for Russians, offering not only visa-free entry but also lower costs compared to other vacation spots.

The case underscores ongoing geopolitical tensions and highlights how tourism and national security can quickly intersect in today’s complex global climate.
