Bulgaria has officially received its first F-16 Block 70 fighter jet from the United States, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s military capabilities and alignment with NATO standards. The aircraft landed at Graf Ignatievo Air Base on April 2, 2025, and was welcomed in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov, Defense Minister Atanas Zapryanov, and other high-ranking officials.

Prime Minister Zhelyazkov emphasized the strategic importance of this acquisition, stating, “This is not just a fighter jet, but a symbol and embodiment of Bulgaria’s strategic partnership with the United States… a partnership that offers a new perspective for the Bulgarian Army.”

The delivery is part of a broader initiative to modernize Bulgaria’s air force. In 2019, Bulgaria contracted to purchase eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft for $1.3 billion, with an additional eight ordered in 2022, bringing the total to 16 jets expected by 2027.

This modernization effort comes in response to regional security concerns and aims to replace the aging fleet of Soviet-era MiG-29 fighters. The introduction of the F-16s is anticipated to enhance Bulgaria’s defense capabilities and its role within NATO.
