MADRID – April 29, 2025 – Nearly 90% of Spain’s electricity supply was restored on Tuesday morning following a large-scale blackout that left much of the country without power. The announcement was made by Red Eléctrica de España (REE), the nation’s electricity grid operator.
While the exact cause of the outage remains unknown, unverified rumors of a cyberattack have circulated widely across social media. Authorities have urged caution, warning the public against spreading disinformation.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation, stating that “all potential causes” are currently under investigation. He emphasized the need for patience and warned citizens not to jump to conclusions.
“Roughly 15 gigawatts of electricity vanished suddenly—more than half the country’s consumption at the time,” Sánchez explained. He did not provide a timeline for full restoration but noted that some employees would be required to stay home on Tuesday due to ongoing disruptions.
Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro also commented, stating the source of the outage was “most likely in Spain,” though he did not elaborate further.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns about infrastructure vulnerability and digital threats in the region.
