A shocking act of violence has shaken Poland after a 35-year-old prison guard was charged with the brutal murder of a doctor at the University Hospital in Kraków. Prosecutors have accused the suspect of multiple crimes, including attempted assault on a nurse, and requested his pre-trial detention.
According to Polish media, the suspect stormed into the orthopedic examination room on Tuesday during a patient consultation and repeatedly stabbed Dr. Tomasz Solecki. Despite rapid emergency aid, the doctor succumbed to multiple stab wounds to his chest and abdomen.
The attacker, who had served in the Polish prison service since 2020, most recently worked at a correctional facility in Katowice. Justice Minister Adam Bodnar confirmed that internal reviews had previously flagged concerning behavior, but no decisive action had been taken.
During his initial hearing, the man showed no remorse and refused to testify. Prosecutors have called for a psychiatric evaluation and a three-month detention. The charges include first-degree murder and attempted bodily harm, as a nurse who tried to help the doctor was present during the attack.
In response to the incident, Colonel Andrzej Pecka, head of the national prison service, resigned. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk formally dismissed him. Additionally, Deputy Justice Minister Maria Ejchert announced the formation of a special investigative team to review recruitment and oversight protocols within the prison service.
