Since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, Portugal has consistently expressed strong political and humanitarian support for Kyiv. As a member of the European Union and NATO, Portugal has aligned itself with sanctions against Russia and contributed to collective efforts aimed at defending Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Portugal has welcomed Ukrainian refugees, offering them access to healthcare, education, and the labor market. Municipalities and civil society organizations have played a key role in integration efforts, demonstrating broad public solidarity with displaced Ukrainians.

On the international stage, Portuguese officials emphasize that supporting Ukraine is not only a moral obligation but also a strategic necessity for European security. The conflict has reinforced Portugal’s commitment to international law, democratic values, and multilateral cooperation.

Although geographically distant from the conflict zone, Portugal views the war in Ukraine as a defining challenge for Europe’s future. Lisbon is expected to remain an active participant in EU and NATO initiatives aimed at providing long-term support for Ukraine and maintaining European unity.
