Greenland’s minister for mineral resources, Naaja Nathanielsen, has praised European countries for their unified response to tariff threats issued by former U.S. President Donald Trump, saying solidarity and diplomacy are essential as pressure on the Arctic island intensifies. Her comments followed Trump’s announcement that the United States would impose punitive tariffs on several European nations that sent military reinforcements to Greenland at Denmark’s request.
Nathanielsen said she was encouraged by the swift and coordinated reaction from Europe, describing it as a clear signal that Greenland’s future should be determined through dialogue rather than economic coercion. Trump has said he would impose a 10 percent tariff on imports from eight European countries starting in February, raising the rate to 25 percent in June if the issue of Greenland’s status remains unresolved.
European leaders have rejected the threats as unacceptable, emphasizing that Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Danish realm and that its people have the right to self-determination. The dispute has highlighted Greenland’s growing strategic importance, driven by its Arctic location, natural resources and role in transatlantic security.
The issue has also stirred debate in Washington. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said his party would seek to block the tariffs, warning they could harm the U.S. economy and relations with key allies. Some Republicans have also voiced concern, suggesting the measures could backfire politically and economically.
As competition in the Arctic intensifies, the Greenland dispute has become a test of alliance cohesion and diplomatic resolve. Nathanielsen expressed hope that cooperation between Europe and its partners would prevail, underscoring that long-term stability in the region depends on respect for international norms and collective decision-making.
