Austrian authorities uncovered a horrifying human-smuggling operation after finding eight migrants trapped inside a narrow wooden box strapped to the underside of a freight truck — a space so small and toxic it nearly cost them their lives.

Hours in Freezing Air and Exhaust Fumes

Police revealed Wednesday that the migrants, all from Turkey, had been smuggled from Romania through Hungary before reaching Austria. Packed into a crate made of shipping pallets, they spent hours breathing exhaust fumes, leaving several severely hypothermic and some unconscious.

Officials say the conditions were “life-threatening,” noting that the victims had almost no ventilation and were directly exposed to the truck’s emissions.

Two Suspects Arrested

The truck’s 39-year-old Turkish driver was arrested on the spot. His alleged accomplice — a 56-year-old Turkish national living in Graz — was apprehended days later. Investigators report the driver admitted to smuggling up to 40 migrants into Austria, each paying between €15,000 and €16,000 for the deadly journey.

The arrests came after German authorities tipped off Austrian police, prompting a search at a highway rest stop near Schwechat, southeast of Vienna.

A Growing Smuggling Crisis in Central Europe

The discovery underscores the increasingly ruthless tactics human-trafficking networks use to move migrants across Europe. Austrian officials warn that smugglers are growing “more reckless and more dangerous,” putting desperate people at extreme risk for profit.
