Brazil is in tears. Following the death of global football legend Pelé, President Jair Bolsonaro has declared a three-day national mourning period, honoring the man who lifted Brazil to the world stage and forever changed the sport.

Pelé — born Edson Arantes do Nascimento — remains the only three-time World Cup champion in history. His impact on football, on Brazil, and on global culture is immeasurable.

A Nation Pays Its Respects

Football club FC Santos, where Pelé spent the golden years of his career, announced that starting Monday, fans will be allowed to pay tribute at the famed Vila Belmiro stadium. Pelé will be laid to rest on Tuesday in the city of Santos, where his legend began.

Bolsonaro, who leaves office this Sunday, took to Twitter to commemorate the man who made Brazil synonymous with football brilliance:
“We mourn the passing of a man who carried Brazil’s name across the world. He turned football into art and joy. May God comfort your family and welcome you with infinite mercy.”

Incoming president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva echoed the sentiment, saying, “Very few Brazilians brought global recognition to our country like Pelé did.”

Health Battles That Spanned a Decade

Pelé had been hospitalized since November 29 at Albert Einstein Hospital in São Paulo, as complications from colon cancer worsened. His health struggles were long-standing — dating back to a 2012 hip surgery that severely limited his mobility.

In recent years, he frequently appeared in public using a wheelchair or crutches. He had also been hospitalized multiple times for kidney and prostate issues.

The End of an Era

Pelé was not only a sports icon — he was a symbol of hope, pride, and unity for millions. As Brazil enters a period of mourning, tributes are pouring in from every corner of the world, celebrating the athlete who turned football into poetry and carried a nation’s spirit on his shoulders.
