Colombia is bracing for a political firestorm after government sources confirmed that Juan Carlos Florián, a former porn actor and LGBTQ rights activist, will be appointed the country’s new Minister for Equality. The decision, revealed Friday through AFP, is already triggering intense debate in a nation known for its strong Catholic traditions and conservative social values.

Florián, who has served as the ministry’s deputy and worked with several international organizations, will now lead the agency responsible for guaranteeing access to social programs for Colombia’s most vulnerable communities.

Supporters praise the move as a bold step toward inclusion, noting Florián’s long history of advocacy for marginalized groups. Critics, however, argue that his past in adult entertainment is incompatible with a senior government position — a controversy that underscores Colombia’s deep cultural divides.

The appointment marks a significant moment for President Gustavo Petro’s administration, signaling a push toward progressive social reforms despite growing domestic polarization.

As Colombia prepares for the official announcement, the nation is split: some see Florián’s rise as a victory for equality, while others view it as an affront to traditional values.
