A fatal shooting by U.S. federal agents has once again plunged Minneapolis into turmoil, intensifying protests and reigniting a national debate over immigration enforcement and the use of force. The incident occurred just two weeks after another deadly federal operation in the city, deepening public anger and political divisions.
According to witness accounts and widely circulated videos, agents believed to be from Immigration and Customs Enforcement pinned a man to the ground at an intersection before multiple shots were fired. The man was later pronounced dead. The Department of Homeland Security said the shooting occurred during a targeted operation and claimed the individual approached agents with a semi-automatic handgun, prompting fears for officers’ lives. The account remains under investigation.
Protesters quickly gathered at the scene, chanting slogans and accusing federal agents of authoritarian tactics. Police deployed tear gas as tensions escalated; a dumpster was set ablaze and traffic was blocked in surrounding streets.
The shooting triggered swift political reactions. Senator Amy Klobuchar called for ICE to leave Minnesota, while Governor Tim Walz urged the president to halt the operation. Civil rights groups argue that aggressive immigration enforcement is eroding trust and increasing the risk of lethal encounters.
Under President Donald Trump, ICE has become central to an expanded deportation agenda. Operation Metro Surge has sent roughly 2,000 armed agents to the Minneapolis–Saint Paul area, drawing criticism for its scale and intensity.
