In a striking message that could reshape global trade, billionaire innovator Elon Musk is urging Europe and the United States to pursue a “zero-tariff situation” — a move that would effectively create the largest free-trade zone in modern history.

Speaking at a meeting with Italian nationalist leader Matteo Salvini, Musk emphasized that eliminating tariffs across the Atlantic would ignite economic growth, strengthen political ties, and send a clear signal that the West is committed to long-term strategic cooperation.
“I hope they reach an agreement,” Musk said, highlighting that both Europe and the U.S. would benefit from a tariff-free model that encourages investment, innovation, and greater market access.

The proposal, while ambitious, arrives at a moment when global trade tensions remain high and Western economies are searching for ways to counter the influence of China. Musk — also serving as an adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump — positioned the idea as not just an economic upgrade, but a geopolitical necessity.

Analysts note that such a pact would face resistance from protectionist factions on both continents. Industry groups in Europe have long warned about American competition, while U.S. labor organizations remain skeptical of broad liberalization. Still, Musk’s comments are injecting new energy into a debate that has simmered since the collapse of the TTIP negotiations nearly a decade ago.

Whether political leaders act on the idea is uncertain — but Musk’s influence ensures that the conversation will not fade quietly.
