In a dramatic upset that’s already shaking up the Republican race, Nikki Haley scored her first major victory of the 2024 primary season — and made history doing it. The former U.N. ambassador defeated Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., becoming the first woman ever to win a GOP presidential primary.

It’s a symbolic win, but one loaded with political implications.

A Surprise Blow Before Super Tuesday

Despite Haley’s breakthrough, Trump remains the dominant force in the Republican contest. The former president has already won nine state primaries, building a commanding lead that many expect him to lock in during the upcoming Super Tuesday, when 15 states head to the polls.

But Haley isn’t backing down. Not after D.C. — and not after losing her home state, South Carolina.

She insists voters still want an alternative to Trump, arguing that the party deserves a choice beyond what she calls the “chaos” surrounding the former president. Her campaign says the D.C. results prove that point.

“Republicans in Washington Reject Trump”

Olivia Perez-Cubas, Haley’s spokesperson, celebrated the win, calling it “no surprise” and saying it sends a clear message: Republicans in the nation’s capital are rejecting Trump and the turmoil tied to his movement.

Though Washington is a deep-blue Democratic stronghold, with only 23,000 registered Republicans, Haley’s victory still represents a political milestone. It marks the first time a woman has ever claimed a GOP primary win — a moment that will undoubtedly be written into the history books.

The Road Ahead

What Haley lacks in delegate momentum, she is trying to make up for in perseverance and messaging: a call for a new Republican direction, even as Trump’s dominance continues nationwide.

Her next big test will come on Super Tuesday — a decisive day that could either keep her campaign alive or seal Trump’s path to the nomination.
