A towering blaze ripped through a residential complex in Hong Kong on Wednesday afternoon, killing at least 36 people and leaving 279 others missing, in what officials are calling one of the deadliest urban disasters in the city’s modern history.
A Firestorm in the World’s Densest Skyline
The fire erupted inside a high-rise complex in one of the most tightly packed cities on the planet, where millions live in some of the tallest residential structures in the world. Flames spread rapidly through the building, sending choking smoke through stairwells and trapping residents in their apartments.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee confirmed the grim toll early Thursday, adding that 29 survivors remain hospitalized, with seven in critical condition.
“So far, this fire has caused the deaths of 36 people,” Lee said during a midnight press briefing, calling the tragedy “unprecedented” and urging the public to brace for a rising death count.
Nationwide Condolences From Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping issued a rare and direct message of condolence, acknowledging the death of a firefighter who perished while battling the inferno.
Xi called on authorities to launch an all-out effort to extinguish the flames, rescue survivors, and “minimize casualties and losses,” according to state broadcaster CCTV.
Search Continues as Questions Mount
With hundreds still unaccounted for, emergency teams are combing through the charred structure, floor by floor. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigators are exploring whether aging infrastructure, faulty wiring, or overcrowding played a role — chronic problems in Hong Kong’s housing system.
