In a bizarre and dangerous incident in Tokyo, a man armed with a pickaxe attacked the car of famed Japanese filmmaker and entertainer Takeshi Kitano, better known to global audiences as Beat Takeshi. Police confirmed that the suspect repeatedly struck Kitano’s vehicle late Saturday night — but no injuries were reported.

A Violent Outburst Outside TBS Studios

Kitano, 74, had just finished recording his regular talk show at TBS Studios when the attacker approached, shouting demands for the director to exit the car. According to Japanese media, including TBS and Kyodo News, the assailant — believed to be in his 40s — struck the vehicle multiple times with the pickaxe while also carrying a 10-centimeter knife.

Kitano’s bodyguard immediately alerted police, who arrived quickly and arrested the suspect on the spot.

Suspect Felt “Ignored” by Kitano

Reports say the attacker told officers he had been furious since June, when he allegedly knelt in front of Kitano’s car begging for help entering the entertainment industry — and claimed the filmmaker ignored him. Police are still investigating the suspect’s motives and whether the attack was premeditated.

Tokyo police have so far confirmed only that the man was detained on suspicion of illegal weapons possession.

A Giant of Japanese Cinema

Takeshi Kitano is one of Japan’s most influential cultural figures — a director, comedian, actor, and television icon whose work has shaped generations of viewers.

His acclaimed films include Boiling Point (1990), Sonatine (1993), Fireworks (1997), Kikujiro (1999), Dolls (2002), and Outrage (2010). Kitano won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival for Fireworks and earned a Silver Lion for Zatoichi.

To many around the world, he’s also instantly recognizable as the host of the cult-hit Japanese TV game show “Takeshi’s Castle.”

As police continue their investigation, fans across Japan are expressing relief that the beloved filmmaker escaped unharmed — and concern that a simple refusal escalated into a violent assault.
