Ukraine forcefully denied any involvement in Tuesday’s reported drone strike on a Russian-flagged tanker in the Black Sea, calling the incident a “possible Russian provocation” designed to manipulate international opinion. The sharp rejection highlights escalating tensions in the region as Moscow continues to blame Kyiv for attacks far beyond active combat zones.

Ukraine: “We Had Nothing to Do With This Attack”

The controversy erupted after the Russian tanker Midvolga 2, transporting sunflower oil from Russia to Georgia, claimed it had been struck by a drone while sailing roughly 80 nautical miles (150 km) off the Turkish coast. Despite the reported explosion, the vessel did not request assistance and continued toward the Turkish port of Sinop.

Turkish authorities confirmed that all 13 crew members were unharmed, adding more confusion to the incident.

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry wasted no time in issuing a blunt statement.

“Ukraine has nothing to do with this incident, and we officially deny any such accusations spread by Russian propaganda,”
said Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhiy Tykhyi on social media.

Tykhyi also questioned the tanker’s reported route — from Russia to Georgia via Turkey’s exclusive economic zone — calling it “illogical” and potentially staged.

“The alleged route does not make sense and suggests Russia may have orchestrated the entire event,” he added.

A Pattern of Suspicious Incidents in the Black Sea

The Midvolga 2 incident comes just days after explosions rocked two other tankers near the Turkish Black Sea coast. Those vessels — both part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet used to skirt Western sanctions on Russian oil — caught fire following suspected Ukrainian maritime drone strikes.

Ukrainian intelligence sources told multiple media outlets that Kyiv had targeted the sanctioned tankers due to their role in helping Russia evade international restrictions.

Turkey responded sharply. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan condemned the attacks as “unacceptable,” warning that such strikes endanger maritime safety, commercial routes, and human lives. He urged “all parties” to avoid provocative actions that could draw the region into deeper instability.

Ukraine Argues Russia Is Seeking Narratives, Not Facts

Kyiv insists Moscow is attempting to exploit every maritime incident for political gain — especially as Russia faces mounting international pressure over its military actions and circumvention of sanctions.

Ukrainian officials argue that Russia’s accusation is less about evidence and more about manufacturing a narrative to paint Kyiv as a reckless actor in international waters.

Analysts note that the area where the latest incident occurred is heavily monitored, making it unlikely that a Ukrainian operation could go unnoticed. The tanker’s ability to continue its journey without assistance has also raised questions about the severity — or authenticity — of the alleged attack.

What Comes Next

As investigations continue, the Black Sea remains a flashpoint in the broader geopolitical struggle between Moscow and Kyiv. With Russia expanding its accusations and Ukraine pushing back harder than ever, the region risks becoming a theater for competing narratives as much as for military confrontation.

For Turkey — balancing relationships with both sides — the stakes are clear: keep the Black Sea stable, or risk becoming a frontline state in a conflict that refuses to stay contained.
