A shocking wave of violence struck South Africa on Saturday when armed attackers stormed a hostel in Pretoria, killing 11 people, including a three-year-old child, according to police. The massacre erupted inside a building authorities say was operating as an illegal alcohol outlet, a recurring flashpoint for violent crime in the region.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed that ten victims died at the scene, while an eleventh succumbed to injuries in the hospital. No arrests have been made, and police units are actively hunting the suspects.

The motive remains unknown, but investigators believe the attack may be linked to criminal networks tied to illicit liquor sales — a problem police say has spiraled in recent years. “We are facing a serious issue with these illegal alcohol establishments,” Mathe told South Africa’s public broadcaster SABC. “Most attacks occur in these locations.”

The brutality of the assault has reignited concerns about South Africa’s rising violent crime and the government’s struggle to shut down unlicensed taverns and hostels that frequently attract criminal activity.

As authorities comb through evidence and search for the gunmen, residents of Pretoria remain on edge, demanding swift justice and stronger enforcement.
