Martin, Slovakia — A series of loud, unexplained blasts has unsettled residents of the northern Slovak city of Martin, prompting investigations by police, emergency services, and the military. The powerful sounds, described by witnesses as resembling explosions, were heard across multiple neighborhoods during evening and nighttime hours. Despite extensive checks, officials have yet to identify a clear source.
Residents reported hearing short but intense bursts of noise that differed markedly from everyday urban sounds. Some witnesses claimed to have seen flashes of light in the distance, while others described a deep, echoing boom that reverberated through buildings. The Martin Municipal Police confirmed that patrol units also detected the sounds. Police chief Sebastián Andrášik said the volume of the blasts prompted numerous calls from concerned residents.
“It was the kind of noise that would be hard for anyone nearby to miss,” Andrášik noted, adding that reports came from various parts of the city, including densely populated residential areas.

“No traces of explosives or large-scale pyrotechnics were found,” Šefčíková said. Fire and rescue services also confirmed that they had not responded to any incidents related to explosions, fires, or structural damage.

Speculation initially included the possibility of military exercises, but the Slovak Armed Forces firmly denied any involvement. Spokesman Štefan Zemanovič stated that no drills or equipment movements were conducted in or near Martin at the time.
He also noted that similar reports have surfaced in other Slovak towns in the past, suggesting that the phenomenon may not be isolated to a single location.
