Spain is dramatically stepping up its support for Ukraine, committing €1 billion in aid for 2025, Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told El País, as reported by Ukrainian media. The package represents one of Madrid’s strongest signals yet that its backing for Kyiv will not weaken.

According to Albares, the billion-euro total includes weapons purchased in the United States for Ukraine, as well as critical equipment such as power generators to offset Russia’s devastating strikes on Ukraine’s energy grid.

Spain: “Our Commitment Is Long-Term”

“Spain has a long-term commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and defense, and it will honor that commitment for as long as the war continues,” Albares declared.

Madrid is also extending support far beyond the battlefield. Spain has accepted 250,000 Ukrainian refugees, including 40,000 children, and remains a strong advocate for Ukraine’s EU accession and the creation of a special tribunal to prosecute Russian officials for the crime of aggression.

A Clear Message to Moscow—and Europe

Spain’s growing contributions place it firmly among Europe’s most active supporters of Kyiv, sending a message that Western unity remains intact despite war fatigue and contested peace proposals.
