Outgoing President Donald Trump is preparing to make a high-profile visit to the U.S.–Mexico border on Tuesday, where he plans to celebrate one of the signature achievements of his presidency: the construction of more than 640 kilometers (400 miles) of border wall. The White House confirmed that Trump will travel to Alamo, Texas, to highlight what he calls a major success in fixing America’s “broken immigration system.”

The border wall was a central promise of Trump’s 2016 campaign—one he repeatedly claimed Mexico would pay for. In reality, the project was funded overwhelmingly by American taxpayers, prompting criticism from Democrats and immigration advocates who argue the wall failed to meaningfully improve border security.

Tuesday’s appearance marks Trump’s first public event since the violent January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, where his supporters stormed the building as Congress counted Electoral College votes to certify Joe Biden’s victory. The riot left five people dead, including a Capitol Police officer, and plunged Washington into chaos.

Now, with just days left in his term, Trump faces a new and escalating threat: impeachment.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi insists the president must be held accountable, calling for his immediate removal from office. On the Republican side, Senator Pat Toomey condemned Trump’s actions, saying the president committed “impeachable offenses” and should be punished.

As Trump prepares to stand before supporters to tout the wall, he does so under the shadow of mounting political pressure, bipartisan calls for accountability, and an America still shaken by unprecedented violence at its own Capitol.
