Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Belarus has played a complex and controversial role in the conflict. Although Belarusian troops have not officially entered the war, the country has allowed Russian forces to use its territory for military operations, logistics, and missile launches.

In the early stages of the invasion, Russian troops advanced toward Kyiv from Belarusian territory, highlighting Minsk’s strategic importance to Moscow. Belarus continues to host Russian military personnel and infrastructure, including joint training exercises and air defense systems.

President Alexander Lukashenko has repeatedly stated that Belarus is not directly participating in combat operations. However, Western governments view the country as a co-aggressor due to its logistical and territorial support for Russia. As a result, Belarus has faced expanded sanctions from the European Union, the United States, and other Western nations.

Domestically, the war has reinforced Belarus’s political and economic dependence on Moscow. Analysts argue that Minsk’s room for maneuver in foreign policy has narrowed significantly. At the same time, Lukashenko seeks to avoid deeper involvement that could trigger internal instability or stronger international backlash.

Belarus’s position remains closely tied to the evolution of the war in Ukraine. Any major shift in the conflict could directly affect the country’s security, economy, and international standing.
