Prague — Czech health authorities have issued an urgent warning after selected batches of infant formula were found to potentially contain a dangerous toxin. The recall affects products from major manufacturers including Nestlé, Danone, and Lactalis Nutrition Santé, according to the Czech Ministry of Health.

Chief hygienist Barbora Macková said tens of thousands of affected packages had entered the country since mid-December. Parents are advised not to feed the products to children under any circumstances and to return them to retailers for a full refund, even without receipts or with opened packaging.

Health risk identified

The concern centers on contamination with Bacillus cereus, a bacterium capable of producing toxins that cause food poisoning. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps within one to five hours after consumption, explained Matyáš Fošum.

Products and origins

The recall spans multiple brands and product lines, including Beba, Alfamino, Nutrilon, and Aptamil, with specific batch numbers identified by manufacturers. The products were imported from France, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Ireland, highlighting the cross-border nature of food supply chains.

Guidance for parents

Authorities stress that this is a precautionary measure and that swift action can prevent harm. Parents should verify batch codes, monitor children for symptoms, and seek medical advice if concerns arise. The incident underscores the importance of rigorous food safety monitoring and rapid communication.
