Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared on Thursday that any deployment of European troops to Ukraine would be “absolutely unacceptable” for Moscow. His remarks come as Kyiv’s allies continue discussions over providing long-term security guarantees for Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia.
Answering a journalist’s question about potential security commitments for Ukraine, Lavrov said: “This would be absolutely unacceptable for the Russian Federation,” describing such a scenario as direct “foreign intervention on part of Ukrainian territory.”
Lavrov further accused Ukraine of showing no genuine interest in reaching a lasting peace settlement. According to him, Kyiv’s pursuit of security guarantees from Western partners is fundamentally at odds with Russia’s demands. “The Ukrainian regime and its representatives comment on the current situation in a very specific manner, directly showing that they are not interested in sustainable, just, and long-term solutions,” he added during a press briefing.
The statement underscores Moscow’s consistent opposition to deeper Western involvement in Ukraine. While NATO and the European Union have expressed readiness to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, discussions over sending actual combat troops have so far remained largely hypothetical. Nevertheless, Russian officials regularly warn that such a move would escalate the conflict into a direct confrontation between Russia and the West.
Security analysts note that Lavrov’s remarks are intended to pressure European governments as they weigh options for ensuring Ukraine’s defense. While most Western nations focus on military aid, financial support, and training, the idea of troop deployment remains politically sensitive. For Russia, however, even the possibility of such actions is framed as a red line.
As the war continues, the question of how far Europe is willing to go in supporting Ukraine will remain at the center of international debate. Lavrov’s warning highlights both the fragility of ongoing diplomatic efforts and the Kremlin’s firm stance against any foreign military presence on Ukrainian soil.
