Warsaw – A new incident has heightened tensions between Poland and Russia: Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced on Wednesday that a Russian drone exploded in a cornfield near the village of Osiny, about 100 kilometers east of Warsaw.

“We are once again facing a provocation by the Russian Federation – this time through a Russian drone,” the minister told journalists. The incident occurred at a time when international peace talks on the war in Ukraine are taking place. “Just when there is hope for an end to the war, Russia once again tries to provoke,” Kosiniak-Kamysz added.

Drone Equipped with Warhead

According to Polish General Dariusz Malinowski, it was a so-called decoy drone. While it was not armed, it carried a self-destructive warhead. Polish media released a video documenting the explosion.

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski spoke of a “renewed violation of our airspace from the east” and strongly condemned the incident. Poland has long made it clear that it feels increasingly threatened due to its proximity to the war in Ukraine.

Political Message Rather Than Military Force?

Military experts suspect that the use of the drone was more of a political message than a military strike. “It wasn’t about causing serious damage, but about spreading uncertainty and putting pressure on the Polish government,” commented a security expert on Polish television.

The explosion occurred on farmland, and no one was injured. Nevertheless, the incident has caused significant concern in Poland. Observers see it as another signal that Moscow wants to increase pressure on Warsaw – also because of its role as one of Ukraine’s most important supporters.
