In a daring rescue straight out of an action movie, a police officer in Košice, Slovakia, risked his life by climbing between eighth-floor balconies — more than 20 meters above the ground — to reach a man desperately crying for help. With no time to waste and no safe entry through the massive door, the officer made a split-second decision that may have saved a life.
The dramatic incident, captured on video and released by Slovak police, unfolded last Tuesday when officers heard distress calls coming from an apartment high above the street. “He kept shouting for help, but couldn’t answer our questions,” officer Filip, a member of the rapid response motorized unit, told TV JOJ. “We knew the door wouldn’t budge. It was too large and reinforced.”
Life-or-Death Situation
The officers quickly realized the balcony door to the distressed man’s apartment was open. With no idea whether the elderly man was injured, unconscious, or being attacked, they treated the situation as a potential life-threatening emergency.
So Filip made the call: climb.
“I climbed from the neighbor’s balcony over the railing and across to his balcony,” he said. “Sure, there was fear — but saving a life is more important. I just did my job.”
His colleague provided the only safety — gripping Filip’s belt with his bare hand as the officer balanced high above the void. No harness. No ropes. Just sheer training and determination.
Man Found After Lying Helpless for Two Days
Once inside, officers discovered an elderly disoriented man lying on the floor. He told police he had fallen and couldn’t stand due to severe leg problems. He estimated he had been stuck on the floor for two days.
Paramedics were immediately called to the scene. Despite his condition, the man refused hospital transport, police spokeswoman Lenka Ivanová confirmed. Officers then notified a family member to ensure he would not be left alone.
A Split Second, a Heroic Decision
The rescue highlights the kind of rapid judgment and courage often demanded of first responders — moments where hesitation can cost a life. In Košice, one officer’s boldness and a teammate’s steady grip made all the difference.
